Our Last Night on the Road!

Not much to report for yesterday - Bill drove and drove and drove. We left Slidell, Louisiana and stopped for the night in Lake City, FL. I had wanted to stop at Florida Caverns State Park but the tickets for the tour of the caverns are first come, first served and as we neared I called and we [...]

It Was a Creole Soap Opera!

We left our room and headed out - it was not a good night's sleep. The AC went on and off all night and there was lots of noise from cars and voices, coming and going. We headed for the Laura Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana for a tour. First, a stop at King's Truck Stop for a good Southern [...]

Adios Alamo

We woke up and packed up and put our things in the car in the parking garage, then walked to The Alamo. We hadn't made reservations so we would have to wait until later in the day to enter the building, but anyone can tour the grounds any time so we did that. It was much bigger than we thought! [...]

Walking Around San Antonio!

We left San Angelo this morning and headed to San Antonio. Rolling green hills surrounded us most of the trip - farms, pastures, and trees. Very different than southern Texas we saw driving west!

Covering Some Miles!

Happy 90th Birthday, Mom! I'm sorry I'm not with her, but we did celebrate in June with the whole family. Fortunately, brother Carl and Nikki are with her to help her celebrate today with a lobster dinner! Her favorite.

Learning About New Mexico

We left the hotel and stopped at McDonald's for breakfast and were on our way. Less than an hour later we were in Santa Fe, so we found our hotel and then headed to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed - yes, it has been 5000 miles as of today! The oil change was jiffy, so we went to the Santa Fe [...]

Mary Yeomans | HOT!! 106 degrees and not real dry
After checking Waze for the best time to leave Hermosa Beach and head west, we departed at 10:15 am, stopped for gas and a quick car wash, and got on the highway. The temperature climbed from 72 degrees to over 100 as we traveled inland, and the terrain went from green to mostly sandy brown. But, as we exited I-10 we saw Palm Springs which is very green with lots of palms as you would expect. (Those in the photo are native to California and have been trimmed up.) It has a nice street with restaurants and shops and we stopped at the Blue Coyote (recommended to us) for lunch. Both dishes were very good and different than the typical Mexican fare we have had in the past.
Back on the road we headed toward La Quinta, checking out El Paseo Street in Palm Desert on the way. This street included many upscale stores and restaurants and was very long. But the heat did not permit many people to be seen out and about.
We found the house where are college friends, Arliss and Erick Wolf, recently moved. It is a fixer upper and their contractor fell ill with CoVid and his wife died! He had had one shot, she had none. Very sad, so Arliss and Erick are now "camping" in their house and hoping things get moving soon. The plans are completed so it is just a waiting game.
It was great to see our buddies - Arliss and I were roommates for a year before she and Erick transferred to Penn State and we haven't seen each other for 30 years, so there is a lot we are catching up on.
A few beers and wines later we headed to dinner at nearby La Quinta Resort, which has been around for awhile and has had many celebrities visit. Not so crowded now and the fajitas and margaritas were delicious.
Back at home we settled in for the night on a very comfy sofa bed.
