Prince Rupert, More Rain

27 July 2015 | Prince Rupert, AK
Richard
Yesterday I had a reasonably nice passage to Prince Rupert, with almost no rain. A slight current slowed me by up to a knot most of the day, even when the tide was supposed to be with me. As I've said before, tidal current predictions are definitely not always accurate around here.

I'm tied up at the Prince Rupert Rowing and Yacht Club, which is not nearly as exclusive or posh as its name suggests. It's rather small, with narrow slips and fairways, and with lots of potential for maneuvering mistakes if an averse gust should came up. The one person on duty, who handles both the office and the docks, met me at my assigned slip and helped secure Osprey to the cleats.

Luckily, it turns out that there is enough room for me to stay here longer than the one night initially promised. Based on current weather forecasts, which obviously can change, I'm going to stay until Wednesday, which is supposed to be a good travel day. Then I'll move into upper Grenville Channel, where it now looks like I'll need to sit for a couple of more days. By the weekend I should have a few days of fair weather to make some significant mileage south.

I'm embarrassed to say that I left Alaska without catching any salmon. I did troll a few times, but not very often. If it was too rainy or cold or rough, or if I had a long distance to travel, I didn't fish. Some combination of those circumstances covered most of my Alaskan travel days, and the idea of trying to bring in, kill, and clean a bloody fish in a sailboat cockpit, by myself, under those circumstances, just didn't excite me. I don't have a Canadian fishing license so the fishing pole has been put away.

I keep forgetting to mention a woman who came into the Petersburg laundromat while I was waiting for my dryer to finish. She did her laundry while wearing a large handgun in a holster that was strapped to her lower thigh. There. I've mentioned her.
