captain steve
ironie...the little red steely i bought from my friend josh witty in 2002 after he finished
his circumnavigation in st. martin.she's a great strong solid 36 footer with nearly 30
years of sea miles under her keel.
after taking possession of her and cleaning, inspecting and repairing and replacing any
essential bits and peices with my friend leon,i took on chris shaw from bath england as crew
for the 4 month trip from st. martin to trinadad and out of the hurricane zone....it was an
interesting trip as it was my first time as skipper and chris' first crewing posiion.it was
late in the season and the wind was south east as we worked ironie south, new experiences all
around as i had not done much sailing to windward.....the trip was good fun and no major
blunders were made.
after putting the boat up in trinadad, chris headed back to teaching piano in england and i
went back to nantucket island to resume my role as a tile guy and make more money for ironie
my cruising kitty.
i spent 18 months on nantucket away from ironie.when i returned to her,i bought her all the
goodies ironie was in need of,new chain,epirb,liferaft,etc,etc....it took about 2 months to
get the boat in cruising shape....i took on new crew in the form of lonnie rupert....
wayward, retired real estate mogel.we sailed out of the bocca towards los testigos with no
running lights for fear of pirates that were said to pray on yachts passing the eastern
reaches of venuezuela.....we made it to testigos unpirated....i sailed with lonnie through
offshore venuezuelan islands, bonaire and san blas islands arriving in panama in march 2007.
in panama,i took on debrae bishop as a second crew for the passages to galapagos and then
to the marqueseas in french polynesia.....after the canal passage,we started to make the
boat ready for the 2 weeks to the galapagos and thn the month to the marqueseas....in panama
city we were able to make our preperations including a visit from my mom and stepfather,a
very nice diversion from all the work.i also had my wisdom teeth removed in panama before
the passage....i'll rate it as the most pain i've recieved in my life thus far....4 hours in
the chair kiddies....the rum that my friend george on the yacht thalia gave me really made
those pain pills do thier job....yeow!!
challanging light winds on the nose nearly all the way to the galapagos....swing dance
lessons from debrae in the doldrums and pizza and rum in praise of king neptune at our equa-
toral crossing,27 days to fatu hiva in the marquesas....daily radio sked with thalia, imagika,
adagio, promisa and others made the passage not so lonely....lonnie leaves ironie in the
marqueseas to pursue other esoteric interests...enter jamie, the well worn cali surfer dude
on his way to tahiti.....toau island in the tuamotus was lovely and special....tahiti found
ironie in need of crew again and falling behind in the season....i made a desision to put
ironie on the hard once again on raiatea island to buff out the cruising kitty and to find
new crew for the pacific islands passages....from tahiti to raiatea i had a variety french
travelers as crew...another 8 months on nantucket as a stone and tile guy working with my
friend dave and now i find myself and ironie back on raiatea lieing at anchor with 2 new
crew.evan grekowicz surfer/pilot from southern california and fred jordon also known as
"metal fred" ,welder/fabrcator most reciently form the greater seattle area.weve just
finished a whirlwind week and a half in raiatea carenage yet again preparing ironie for
seas....we are on the water now and are getting our slightly rusty sailing skills together
for the next of our future adventures......more to come....stay tuned for future adventure
