CALM BEFORE THE STORM?
30 October 2010 | Grenada

We have woken up this morning to a calm, windless but cloudy day. Despite this, Grenada is on virtual lock down with all but essential workers asked to remain at home. They've even turned off the water supply for the island to avoid contamination. Tropical storm Tomas is predicted to become a hurricane later today and is threatening St Lucia. We have been very lucky to see it track more northwards than expected. Bizarre to see no signs of any severe weather when we were preparing for 70 knot winds last night.
Apparently the development of this storm this late and this far south is unprecedented since records began and we are hoping it will bring an end to what has been a particularly active hurricane season. 2010 now shares 3rd place with 1995 and 1887 for most number of named storms in an Atlantic hurricane season.
