iWinds2 Transit South Plan 2014
21 September 2014
I've been putting together the preliminary plan for iWinds2 transit to KW in Oct. It's all dependent on weather and mechanical and assumes a 5 kt average transit speed -- we're likely to make better time, particularly on the outside passages. The total passage is 1048 nm.
To begin with, Gene, Wayne, and I will take her on Sun Oct 12 to Portsmouth, VA to the beginning of the Intracoastal Waterway (AICW):
12-Oct Homeport Back Creek (Parkwood)
13-Oct 140 nm Portsmouth (Tidewater Yacht Marina)
Following the Navy football game and my 25th USNA Reunion on Sun, Oct 26, Gene will drive me (and Tim?) to Portsmouth. Heather and Stuart will also arrive that weekend with the plan to depart early morning on Mon, Oct 27. The preliminary plan:
27-Oct SM 0 Portsmouth
SM 50 Coinjock
28-Oct SM 50 Coin jock
SM 102 Alligator River / Deep Point or Bear Point (anchor)
29-Oct SM 102 Alligator River / Deep Point or Bear Point (anchor)
SM 153.5 Goose Creek / Campbell and Eastham Creeks (anchor)
30-Oct SM153.5 Goose Creek / Campbell and Eastham Creeks (anchor)
SM 205 Beaufort, NC
31-Oct SM 205 Beaufort, NC (Go outside and commence 24/7 watch)
78.1 nm Cape Fear
2-Nov 113.4 nm Charleston (overnight, rest and re-provision for 24 hours)
4-Nov Charleston
42.5 nm
24.8 nm
22.8 nm
59.3 nm Amelia Island, FL
5-Nov Amelia Island, FL
19.3 nm
28.9 nm
53.6nm
39.0 nm Cape Canaveral, FL
6-Nov Cape Canaveral, FL
15.8 nm
95.5 nm Riviera Beach (West Palm Beach)
7-Nov Riviera Beach (West Palm Beach)
45 nm
15 nm Miami
8-Nov Miami
90 nm Long Key
9-Nov Long Key
60 nm Key West (Galleon Marina)
Where exactly we pull-in along FL will depend on progress, weather and supplies. Eric's expressed an interest to join for the remaining leg from somewhere in FL to KW. I suggest him joining in West Palm Beach. The transits from Charleston to West Palm Beach are long (24/7 watches), but the schedule lightens after that, allowing for possible anchoring or mooring.
In addition to this being conservatively estimated at a 5 kt SOA, it also has iWinds2 arriving KW on 9 Nov. Our objective is to be there NLT 1700 on 12 Nov.
Keep watching here for updates. You can also follow us if you track our AIS in real-time.
So excited! Let the journey begin . . . .
