Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

California: we are here

We spent some time last night and today with some of the other boats on the dock. Seems we are all waiting to go South. Some are in a hurry, and some, like us, just dawdle along. We are probably going to stay around tomorrow and head out the next day to Crescent City. One of the boats here is ahead of us and will go tomorrow and scope out the town for us.
We went into the shopping mall and got some groceries and I went to Sears and got a soldering iron for melting ropes.

We enjoyed Brookings a lot. We decompressed and visited with Happy Lady, Mystic and Gitano and their crews. This morning we changed our mind about getting going and decided to push on for Eureka in 2 legs. The first is to Crescent City where we are now. One of the crew on Mystic had some disparaging things to say about Crescent City, but we found the town very close to the marina and we found convenient shopping and a marina that has fallen a little short of its former glory. The fuel is totally inaccessible for us pleasure boats, but that can wait for Eureka.
We got going at 0700 and had no trouble making the leg other than we had little wind to make it to Crescent City, so we had to motor the entire way there. So far the weather looks benign for the next 36 hours, so we will make the 61 mile passage to Eureka tomorrow at 0600 and arrive at low slack at Eureka Bar.
The weather has warmed up and, at times, I even had my coat off while we were underway today. It felt good to be in California. Anita needs a surfboard and then can be the quintessential California Girl (Blonde hair, Blue eyes, nice shape and a million dollar smile).
We are looking forward to getting to a major centre to get a little repair work done on the genny, some specialized parts for the rig to make sailing Karina a little easier. That might have to wait for San Diego and Downwind Marine.
So far the heater has not been on in 3 days - some kind of record for this cruise. After looking at the forecast, it might be a while before we get this heater on again.
