Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Santa Rosalia

The church allegedly designed by Eiffel. There has been some doubt about that. Wiki Santa Rosalia to see more.
Have not been doing too good on keeping up with the blog. I am a little depressed as we are soon going back to B.C. and the weather is wet and cool up there. We will probably close up this part of the cruise tomorrow when we arrive in San Carlos. We have a date with the travel lift on the 19th. Hopefully, we will just be home a couple of days after that. The weather here in Santa Rosalia is warm. The last couple of days we have had 25NNE winds that have prevented us from getting off too far. We will leave SR tonight and arrive in San Carlos tomorrow in the a.m.. Then we swing into high gear for shutting down Karina’s systems so we can exit soon after the haulout.
The trip up here from Punta Chivato was a motorboat ride. There was a little wind for about an hour just before SR. We didn’t bother with the sails.
Once in SR, you can see the French influence in the architecture. The wood frame buildings are a refreshing change from what we’ve been seeing all the way along this coast.
The “French” bakery didn’t have baguettes! However the bread was good. Good provisioning in this town as it seems to be the last stop as one heads into the Northern Sea.
A couple of days ago, we walked S of town several miles to a public housing development. The “houses” were all of maybe 550 Sq. feet. There were no services (electricity water). I have no idea of how the 200 or so new homeowners are going to get any kind of public transportation out to their new homes.
SR is a mining town. Right now they are in flux as the Gypsum mine on Isla San Marcos is shutting down next year. The copper mine in town is restarting, managed by a Canadian interest.
