Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Marina Seca - San Carlos

Jay/ Too darn Hot
We looked over Karina this morning. The good news is the blisters are way down and dried up. This should make the repair an easy fix. The bad news is the refrigeration is on the fritz. I suspect the seals have dried up as the summer is so wickedly hot. we will have to find a technician to fix the fridge. I got a line on a local who is supposed to be good.
We went over to Star Marine and looked at bottom paint. 150% of the prices in the States. So.... I guess we will have to take out the CSC I scooped before leaving the States last year.
Later...
The fridge is fixed. Just plugged in shore power and the fridge was fixed! Its a miracle when the batteries were a little low after laying fallow all summer.
We uncovered a lot of rust on the rudder. This was no surprise as the bottom paint we were using contained a corrosive agent to stainless steel. So, tomorrow we will prime the rudder with zinc chromate and then put bottom paint on. Today, I laid 3 batches of chemical rust remover. Seems to be working OK. Tomorrow, when it is calm, we will spray the zc.
I laid 2 batches of epoxy over the 3 4 blisters we found near the leading edge of the keel. Tomorrow we will do one or two batches of epoxy and then prep the bottom for painting Thursday morning. We should hit the water later Friday morning.
We still have a number of jobs to do: building the bike locker and bending on sails so we will be in San Carlos for probably another week or so. We expect we will run into the crew of Relax as they said they were going to be here around the 25th.
