Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Off we go!

Jay/ Hot
Puerto Escondido in the early light.
We got going at 1000 on Saturday morning. We had a great sail across the sea on a 90 degree starboard tack. It was so warm, I slept in my shorts and T shirt on off watch. We kept the usual watch schedule and it worked very well for us. I daresay we are getting used to overnight watches. I started reading a Dave Barry book and I got halfway through it as we crossed. I will finish it on the next passage to Topolobampo.
We sailed most of the night except for an hour on either end of the cruise. The winds during the day were into the low 20s. So we had the main reefed for the day. Just before dark the winds settled down to the mid teens and we shook out the reef and kept a few wraps in the genny until dawn. Although folks at Marina San Carlos were concerned about the “high winds” I think everyone has to know their own boat. Karina enjoyed the sail and, once set, Wayne did his usual impeccable job of steering Karina all night. There were a few navigational issues on Anita’s last watch, but other than that, I was uninterrupted. The first off watch (1700-1930) I had difficulty resting as it seemed a little early for my body. The next one (2200-0030) was no problem. However, the lack of sleep did catch up with me early last night. We turned in around 2000 and had no trouble sleeping the night through.
Puerto Escondido seems the same as always. The cruiser community has enough intrigue to make Machiavelli swoon. Fortunately, there to help ease the way was Gerry aboard Moshulu. As well, in the later afternoon Kip and Mary Hill returned to their boat after a 7 month absence.
The weather is just right at 1015 this morning. I am sitting in the common room at the Singlar Marnina. They charge about 150 pesos a day for Karina and we will stay probably until Friday when we will take a short leg to Agua Verde and then an overnight leg to Topolobampo.
