Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

The bus in PV
12/11
Today we got up a little later than usual. We monkeywrenched around with trying to do some computer stuff. That, so far, has turned into a bust. We will have to see a Guru next week to get results.
Today’s topic is the bus:
The Mexican buses are invariably in pretty desperate repair. Invariably, the gears grind and the windows have cracks and often tape over them. Our drivers have been everything from responsible to very casual with the job. Our first bus we took in PV has the driver texting while driving. At some point, he decided he needed to fuel up. No problemo! Just pull over to the nearest Pemex station and fill up – with all the passengers on the bus. My brother says he has seen a driver smoking while fuelling and the bus full of people. Welcome to my conflagration! So far, we haven’t been involved in a collision, but I am told that it is a very casual affair. The drivers get out and chat and then get back in their busses and take off like nothing happened.
Because engineers have to pay some homage to handicapped access, there are ramps on most street corners. Sidewalks happen and then disappear in a way that makes wheelchair access a cruel joke. The ramps on the streetcorners would be hard to manage with a mountainbike, never mind a wheelchair.
The people who ride the bus are a pretty eclectic sort. Some are handicapped. It is obvious that orthopaedic treatment is lacking. If a person has a fractured ankle – they are on crutches for the rest of their lives. I saw a person in the market today that surely needed surgery in a big way. If this were Canada, there would be some kind of revolt if the poor were treated like that.
Last night the music in town went on until 0300. One thing for sure – the Mexicans sure like a party! The music was so loud, we thought the band was right there in town. No! A DJ was playing music so loud, you couldn’t get within 200’ of the speakers!
