Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

At Berkovich Marina

21 January 2013 | Berkovich Marina - La Paz
Jay/ Warm
I went racing yesterday. That was a huge mistake as the captain of the boat had a very childish meltdown and was swearing at all the crew. I will have to be careful around this guy as he seems to know everything (or thinks he does). Fortunately he fired the other guy and me and swore we will never board his boat again. I am so very OK with this.
From Anita
Haulout day for the cutlass bearing. Up at 0700. On our way at 0730 to be at Berkovich by "opening." Opening here is a rather casual event. Hey don't use clocks. They barely use calendars. Off to an auspicious start when the head backed up and sprayed Jay with poo. After stripping Jay, washing clothes, and bleaching the head we started off late. Still we arrived at 0830 and anchored. 0930 (the time of our haulout) the wind shifted and started to send us dangerously close to the boats anchored fore and aft . After attempts to free the anchor from the flotsam on the bottom, we were given permission for a temporary tie up at the fuel float.
Berkovich finally called us at 1130 and by noon had us out of the water. The workman took a few minutes before his lunch to start the removal of the shaft and cutlass bearing. It is now 1439 and there is no sign of our workman. (Late development- he arrived at 1500) Our confidence in this job being done today is diminishing. It would have been perfect to ride the incoming tide this afternoon.
This culture of "momentito" and "manana" (which generally mean "in an hour" and "next week sometime") is very difficult for Jay who has spent his life as a punctual person. He is never late because he is sick- he is sick because he is late.
We were thrilled to hear that Cathy and Reno are here in La Paz. They have battery problems and health issues that will likely keep them in La Paz for a week or two, so I'm sure we will get a good visit in with them.
Late development:
There is a wow in the shaft. They can fix it. The fix may not last. We'll try it anyhow. I think the wow has been a long time in developing. If it takes 10 more years to become a problem again, it will be someone else's problem.
