Viva Mexico!

17 December 2007 | La Paz, Mexico
Back in La Paz at last. It's been over 9 months, but it feels as though we were never really gone! We spent the time both in Canada and South Africa seeing family and friends and waiting out the hurricane season.

Keeping Jabula under wraps!

Before we left, we made sure our lovely Jabula was well wrapped up, and took down anything (like sails, etc.) that may increase her wind resistance in the event of a hurricane. It was well that we did as Henriette came rolling along and although it was "only" a tropical storm when she hit La Paz, the winds in the boatyard were recorded at a steady 60 kts!

Henriette 2007

We were thrilled with our preparations as Jabula withstood all that was thrown at her and was virtually as we left her upon our return. All we had to deal with was dirty decks and an invasion by "Evil Weevil" which stemmed from a bag of Muesli. These were easily dealt with, and now that all her gear's re-attached, she's beginning to look ship-shape again.
We still have to sand-blast the keel and paint her bottom, but that is in the pipeline and we should be back in the water before Christmas. None to soon according to the admiral!

Admiral Jeannie

Our plans (as always) are flexible, but we are planning to sail across to Mazatlan on the mainland and from there down south to Central America.
The boatyard has been good from the perspective that Jabula has been safe. But boating in La Paz is expensive. Be prepared to pay US prices (and sometime higher) for everything from boat storage, parts and equipment, to sand-blasting your keel! The Bercovich Boatyard (where we are located) is a 'working' boatyard.

Clutter, junk and how the hell do we get out?!

Don't expect a clean and neat environment! It has a railway-style winch to haul the bigger boats, and a very unique truck and trailer set-up for hauling your common yachts up to 50ft.

Travellift???

They appear to know what they are doing and were very careful with Jabula. It is quite amazing how they manage to squeeze in the number of boats they have in the yard - sometimes fitting boats so close together there are only inches separating them. Don't expect any deals from Mr. Bercovich. I could ruminate about a Mexican with Slavic Mafia connections, but we won't go there.
