Cephalonia

We are alone again since Sue and Paul headed off to Florence for the next bit of their Grand Tour. It was really great to have them with us. Easy to travel with and excellent company . Hopefully they can join again somewhere on our travels.
We are still in Cephalonia. Weather was a bit iffy for a couple of days and now, unfortunately, a bit of a gastro bug that Andy had a few days ago has returned so we are having a bit of a quiet time.
We did hire a car a couple of days ago and drove round the island. It really is a pretty place. Lots of limestone mountains covered in trees and some absolutely stunning bays and beaches. We headed up a hair-raising stretch of road to Fiskardo in the North to have a look at the anchorage up there. On the way we passed Myrtos Beach and stopped for lunch in Assos, the most incredible little Greek village with whitewashed houses and a lovely beach with crystal clear water (see photos). The yachts in Fiskardo are berthed right on the town quay, just footsteps away from dozens of tavernas. Definitely a party place. We then drove all the way down south to see Poros. We had had lots of other cruisers recommending this place and I had really wanted to go but Heikell gives it quite a bad write-up in the Cruising Guide as it getting quite choppy with the prevailing winds. Whether this has put people off I don’t know but when we got there, it was quite a sad sight. Empty harbour and many empty tavernas. Maybe it’s just late in the season or maybe he’s put everyone off.
We are in Sami, the main port, moored right by where the ferry comes in. Unfortunately, it spends the night about 100 metres from us with its generator going and all the lights on. Thank God for earplugs. We’ve also been joined by a naval supply ship who are now our next door neighbours. Not exactly the most beautiful anchorage we’ve stopped in but at least there is plenty going on to watch. And no Cheryl, they haven’t invited us over for sundowners!
Andy has just risen from his sick bed and thinks he may make it through another day so, all being well, we are off back towards the Corinth Canal tomorrow and over to the Cyclades for the last few weeks of the season.
