Day 15 in the BBB
16 May 2009
Jane
Well over half way now, thank Goodness! 1345 miles to go. Haven't put anything on here because there hasn't been anything to tell you! We've caught a few fish now. Tuna, mackerel and, possibly, wahoo but as I don't know what wahoo looks like, I'll have to wait until I see someone who can tell me! Whatever it was, it was lovely!
Weather has been OK. We did have a couple of nights with quite a few squalls, high winds and torrential rain, which was interesting but the boat held up well and ploughed on. Worse thing is this Pacific swell which makes the boat roll from side to side continuously. We're all getting a bit fed up with it now and would like a day of stillness. Cooking is a trial, having to hang on and avoid boiling water slopping over you, and, as for going to the toilet!! I have become very skilled at wedging my elbows against the wall and .......well, you can imagine!
We spend the day reading, checking the boat, doing any jobs that come up, musing on life. The nights are becoming a bit miserable Hard to read and I have listened to all 'The Archers' I had on the IPod! We do 3 hour shifts from 9-9 and, at the moment, the moon is waning and doesn't come up till 3 am so it's pretty dark. Amazing amount of stars though, including the Southern Cross, and spectacular sunrises and sunrises.
We keep in touch with several of the other boats by e mail reporting our position every day. Several are a few days ahead of us so will suss out what's what in Hiva Oa and let us know which bar we will be meeting them in for, what I'm sure, is going to be one hell of a celebration!!
ETA is 11 days at the moment so will put another blog on here nearer the time. Thinking of you all - well, you have to do something in the middle of the night! Jxx
