Our first 'new' place to explore!

23 April 2008 | North Keppel Island, Queensland
Now this was finally something new for us! North Keppel Island was somewhere we didn't visit last time we were here and although it's not too far from Great Keppel Island (only a couple of hours), it has a completely different feel to it. Perhaps that is because it lacks the big resort that Great Keppel was known for.

The water was crystal clear and the weather was gorgeous, it's starting to feel like an adventure. The Island was very well set up for camping with toilet facilities and picnic tables dotted everywhere. We went to shore and decided to go for an explore along the tracks provided for walks. Now, anyone who knows me well knows how unfit I am but I took on the challenge and joined Jay, Jason and Loretta for a walk up to the Keppel Bay Lookout. I have an aversion to walking up hills and I had the feeling this would be the first of many.

The view from the lookout when we finally arrived there was magnificent. On the way to the lookout we met up with one of the Rangers who told us that there was an education centre/camp on the Island which explained the children we had seen rowing past our boat in long canoes and disappearing off into the distance never to be seen again.

We left the lookout and walked on to Maisie Bay, which was not much of a bay at low tide. It should have been called muddy beach with no water bay. On our way back to the boat we ran into the Ranger again, he had left some maps and details of other walks on Islands in the area. Unfortunately they were all South of where we were and we had no intention of going backwards. But it is nice how friendly and helpful people have been so far!

We'd pretty much done everything that could be done at North Keppel Island and after one night it was time to move on again. Island Head Creek here we come!
