Beach bars and barnacles...
04 May 2008 | Gloucester Island, Queensland
Gloucester Island was a surprise. I thought we were heading somewhere that would be fairly isolated but when we arrived we found a few boats anchored up and a couple of resorts. One of the resorts, Monty's, has been there for years. It was mentioned in our 'Cruising the Coral Coast' book and it appeared to be quite popular. It looked like they had a number of guests there. Closer to where we were anchored was another resort called the Gloucester Island Eco Resort. This one had a nice looking bar and very friendly staff and under normal circumstances we may have stayed to partake of a beverage or two but having had a couple of big nights at Airlie Beach we were keen to have a couple of 'dry' days. However, we did go for a nice big walk along the beach, collecting shells and exploring the many rock pools. We came across a small eel on the beach which Jason felt the need to poke at with a stick until it got angry and tried to bite him. We found a track from the beach leading to a road which took us along the back of the houses. The houses were all very well maintained and well set up. It looked like a very nice place to have a holiday home and a nice stopover for a night before heading off to Cape Upstart.
