Biking day 1
23 August 2011 | Dworp, Belgium
We met up with one of the Experience Plus! tour leaders and the other 12 clients on the trip just outside our hotel in central Brussels. It had rained hard that morning, however on the bus ride to the hotel in Dworp we learned that there had been a torrential downpour in that town, flooding many roads, the basement restaurant of the hotel, and basically creating a low level civil emergency. The Belgians were efficiently cleaning it up, and we managed to fetch our bikes from the flooded barn without swimming with the local ducks. Nice to get out and stretch the cycling legs finally, on a two hour unguided loop where we rattled over way too many wet cobblestones and dodged mud slicks on the road. The worst tragedy, however, was at the nearby restaurant where we went for dinner, where the entire stock of the really excellent lambic beer list was underwater in the cellar, and unreachable without scuba gear. We tried, but... Hopefully the labels did not float off.
