Merry Christmas from Shanghai

23 December 2009 | At Dock, Shanghai China
John and Jean Locke
On December 19th we flew from Beijing back to Shanghai on Air China, to meet the ship and reboard.

Our trip back to Shanghai was pleasant, and a lot shorter than the 10 hour train ride. It only took 2.5 hours to fly back. The Beijing Airport was extremely efficient, very little walking, and was very spacious and clean.

Same thing at the other end in Shanghai. We boarded a bus on deplaning, and were driven right to the baggage claim. Again, no walking.

The ride back into Shanghai by taxi was even longer than from Edmonton airport. It took about 45 minutes, but only cost $25.00.

We were supposed to have three more days ashore in Shanghai, before we were due to reboard the Rickmers New Orleans on December 22nd, however that stretched into five days, and we finally got back aboard on Christmas Eve. The ship has been sitting at anchor offshore for almost two days, waiting for a berth to free up in the port.

Not all bad news for us however, as we got to do more sightseeing, eat more good food, and do even more walking!!

This certainly has to be the most unusual Christmas Eve we will likely ever experience. Sitting in the fog, on the dock in Shanghai, watching our ship appear in the mist and slowly pull alongside. It was a welcome site after 13 days ashore exploring China.

As much as we enjoyed our adventures ashore, it's good to be back aboard our "home" for Christmas. We brought some goodies back to the ship for our adopted family of officers and crew to help celebrate the holiday. We also found a nice package of wine and treats waiting for us in our cabin. Looks like Santa found us here in China, no problem!!

One thing we all have in common, is that we are away from our friends and loved ones over the holidays.

From Jean and I, to everyone back home....we wish you all the best for the holiday season.

Merry Christmas from Shanghai!
