Wolves On Shore

23 May 2012 | Port Harvey, BC
George and Sue Stonecliffe
After 56 miles of motoring with the ebb current from Campbell River, we pulled into the Havanah Channel, and headed toward Port Harvey, a new but popular moorage for boaters. We spoke to a Canadian sailor who was going to Douglass Channel to see where the shale sand oil business in Alberta was going to establish their export terminal with China. Obama's veto of the Keystone Pipeline from Canada has lost a valuable oil source from a friendly neighbor. As we headed around the inlet by dinghy, we saw two kayakers coming towards us. But we were interested in what was in back of them on shore: two WOLVES! We identified them through binoculars. Then verified the sighting with the owner of the Port Harvey Marina. He said there are four wolves, a grizzly and two cubs, and a few black bears that are on the island! The wolves destroyed a 140 pound dog recently, crippling its hind quarters before doing it in :( This is wild country!
