Once we weighed anchor, we fought up to a 4 kt current and blinding fog, finally making it into the Park only to be too late for the 1100 briefing. GBNP asks that visitors with private boats go through a briefing on minimizing close encounters with whales and sea lions. We finally were on our boat heading into the Park, seeing several humpbacks in Bartlett Cove where we had the briefing. We motored north seeing a couple more humpbacks before leaving their protected waters. When we came to South Marble Island, we turned off our engine and drifted while we watched tufted puffins, murres, sea lions feeding and commiserating, and sea otters. Not an hour went by without seeing sea otters, including one raft of 28 individuals! The afternoon was mostly free of fog, with wisps of fog over the land and the occasional island. It is wonderful to be here, and see this protected environment.
