Huna Tlingit Lodge Carvings

20 July 2014 | Hoonah, AK
George and Sue Stonecliffe
While at the Glacier Bay NP Lodge, we heard about a Tlingit Lodge that was being prepared, carved, constructed to be erected close by the GBNP Lodge in 2016. So when we moored at the Hoonah Marina, we were delightfully surprised that we could go see the carving in progress in a building nearby. Owen, one of the Tlingit carver/presenters, talked with us about the story of one of the pole carvings involving a giant octopus and two men who lost their lives killing the octopus, a long time enemy of the people in Glacier Bay. We saw the planks that were being painted with native paintings for the front exterior wall of the new lodge. There were numerous poles to hold the great lodge's roof. Most of all it was exciting to hear Owen talk about some of his life, his son's success as a native speaker of Tlingit, Haida, and English, and a hunting experience where he brought down a big brown bear at point blank range.
