And so it begins!
02 July 2017 | Tongue Point, Astoria, Oregon
George Stonecliffe
We slipped away at 7:30 am from Portland Yacht Club in a cloudy, cold pre-July 4th summer morning. After passing through the Columbia River I-5 Bridge and Vancouver RR Bridge, we joined up with Leon and Careen Cieloha who accompanied us downstream in their fishing boat to St. Helens. Before parting, Careen and Sue exchanged fresh-made jam for zucchini bread. A good exchange! Our thoughts as we motored downstream included: too many blankets, not enough hand towels, and 'can't believe we are underway on this beautiful Journey!' The sun finally came out after lunch, and the wind-effect started to be felt as we reached Cape Horn and Puget Island near Cathlamet, WA. We pulled into Tongue Point at 6:30 pm. This favorite anchorage just upstream from Astoria has WWII history as a provisioning center for the Liberty Ships that were taking Yanks into the Pacific Theater. We were so grateful to family and friends that were sending us text messages wishing us well on our Journey. Your best wishes were deeply felt by us. Tomorrow we will head out around noon, taking advantage of wind and tide, turning LEFT to head "SOUTH!' arriving in Newport, Oregon midday on Monday, July 3rd, in time for the Independence Day celebrations.
