8th Day of Baja Haha

07 November 2017 | Bahia Santa Maria, Mexico
George Stonecliffe
Today we took our dinghy into the back mangroves of Bahia Santa Maria, comfortably passing through the narrow entrance at a rising tide. The back waters were passable at the higher reaches of a 6' tidal change. As we slowly motored along, we saw 15 bird species, including herons, egrets, corrmorants, pelicans, terns, gulls, godwits, willets and our favorite: a bittern! In the afternoon, we partied with the rest of the fleet ashore, with food from the local citizens ($15/plate), and with a live band that came from La Paz 12 hours away on rustic roads. Now we're buttoned up ready to sail in the morning to Cabo San Lucas 150 miles away. Tonight, as last night, we are having 20-25 knot winds in the anchorage blowing off the local mountains. With daytime temperatures in the mid-80s, the winds are refreshingly cool and welcome.
