Around Cape Scott

We left Bull Harbour on Hope Island just to the east of the passage to Cape Scott at 5am on Saturday, May 25th. Taking advantage of the 2-knot ebb current, we motored along an inner passage between shore and a large area of seaweed at 7-8 knots speed-over-ground. Local fisherman stay in 20' depths in this area! When past the seaweed, we eased out into deeper waters towards Cape Sutil which is about a fourth of the way to Cape Scott (which is the northwestern most point of Vancouver Island). Just past Cape Sutil we had a humpback whale splash and sound just 50 yards off our starboard side. Winds were NW8-10 against the lessening 1.5 knot ebb current, but wave action was 'bumpy' including a healthy western swell. Moving out to 200' depths, the conditions eased a bit. It was 9am when we rounded Cape Scott. We did see small patches of 'dancing waves', caused by opposing currents from either side of Vancouver Island. As we turned south we passed a Canadian Coast Guard ship as we headed to Quatsino Sound 30 miles south.
