Ganges Harbor

12 May 2017 | Ganges Harbor
Ron
Ganges Harbor is just outside the town of Ganges, the main town on Salt Spring Island. We crossed over from Cowichan Bay in the late morning / afternoon, setting the anchor in Ganges Harbor at 6:30 that evening. The best thing about this passage was that we got to sail!

For those that are unfamiliar with the Pacific Northwest spring/summer winds - they tend to not be very strong or just blow either from the north or from the south. Not necessarily conducive to north/south passages unless the wind is going directly with you. The general rule of thumb for a trip up or down the Inside Passage is 1/3 of the time sailing; 1/3 of the time motor sailing; and 1/3 of the time just motoring. Up to this point we had been in the last group the entire time! While the engine and hull shape is efficient - it isn't what you have a sailboat for.

We managed to get in a little over an hour of sail time. In a switch of "normal" jobs, Kirsten was at the wheel and Ron was the sail person. It was great fun to finally turn the motor off and just listen to the wind. Alas, as the wind was fickle as it is want to be, it finally dropped to less than we need and so we ended up motoring the rest of the way to the harbor.

We again encountered a large mooring field. We had been told they were getting more extensive in Canada, especially around the Southern Gulf Islands, and this was certainly true here. On our last visit to Ganges, the mooring field was maybe half the size it was now. Anyway we anchored out in a very nice spot and spent the next 2 nights 'on the hook' as cruisers say in a wonderful spot.
