Just Add Water

The rainy weekend started off with overcast and fog but no rain. It looked like I might be able to get something done on the D4 dinghy. I wanted to change the bow seat which is really the bow deck. The sailing option uses the deck to hold the freestanding mast. I didn’t like how the deck looked, [...]

D4 Dinghy Alternative Seats

The rain event was more wind than rain, strong winds with gusts up to 44 mph. We drove into town to see what the harbor was like. There was a small sailboat that had dragged anchor and was sitting close to shore. The tide was out. We left and played with Bleu at Notter’s Pond.

D4 Inside Seams

Day two of the dinghy build started out with me finishing wiring the hull bottoms together on the centerline of the bottom panels. This was much easier than the wiring of the chine edges of the bottom panels and the side panels.

D4 Dinghy Day One

A Wharram Pahi 26 had been anchored in the river nearby the boatyard and was hauled out with the travel lift. I went around to look at it and talked to the owner couple. I was surprised that it had been built in Martinique in 1988. The boat is more than 30 years old.

D4 Redux

The inflatable (deflatable) dinghy I had bought was deteriorating. It had bottom seams separating. It is a West Marine branded dinghy made out of PVC. HH66 is the adhesive to reattach the seams. A friend had a similar problem and bought the same adhesive. I was waiting to hear from him how it worked [...]

The Clincher

We decided to go to Amelia Island for the day, probably to the beach. Our plan to cycle around on the Raleigh 20’s seemed like a bad idea, Bleu can’t keep up with a bicycle for very long and when he quits he quits. So we would walk, where?, Fort Clinch State Park. She has a forever pass for Florida [...]

While trying to revive Robert’s old boat starter battery I started thinking about Kaimu’s starboard battery bank that had been ruined when the solar array on that side of the catamaran lost its circuit. These are AGM or SLA batteries, type 27, around 100 AH, maintenance free. This type of battery loses its capacity if allowed to discharge completely. I was able to repair them somewhat, get back some of the capacity, but they needed to be replaced. While searching online for replacements I found my Amazon order for the batteries placed 3 ½ years ago. I reordered 4 batteries. No core charge, free shipping, about $50 in sales tax. They will be my Christmas present.

With my renewed energy I cleaned up the debris from the Igloo cooler filled with some of my small electronics and rainwater, and put the Igloo on the free pile. My old Yamaha 50 TLRX outboard whose mount had collapse, dumping the outboard on the ground, was hoisted using a come along. Perhaps the mount can be rebuilt. It’s only plywood and pine 2X lumber. Someone who was trying to help me out while I was away made a mess with rope around the outboard. Incompetent.

A fellow named Jaques was advertising a Universal M-25 diesel, complete, for $1000. I had spoken to him and he had launched a short time ago, but I have his phone number. This diesel is a direct replacement for the Atomic 4 in the Catalina 30. The diesel is in under wraps somewhere in the boatyard. I rode around on the bike looking for it and ran into an Aussie fellow. I told him what I was doing and he said he also had an Atomic 4 that he wanted to replace with diesel. We agreed to keep in touch and work something out if and when the diesel was purchased.

I felt good getting things done and feeling eager to face life, wondering why I had been so down. I went back in the blog, reading recent posts and could see I needed support from those around me, and so I should give support to those around me. Robert, who is lending me his vehicle from time to time here in the boatyard, is very down. He is one person who is on the same level as me intellectually, but he is really down. I plan to work on him to help and hope that I don’t get punished.

I sent a zen quote about sailing to Webb Chiles and he replied by asking about the boatyard. He is now at Hilton Head and needs to haul his boat, so it looks like he will come down here in a month or so. I’ve corresponded with him for a while but have never actually met him.

I went through the motions of pizza night but Mariola was under the weather and it looked like there might be only 2 or 3 for the pizzas. I moved the oven and propane cylinder up to the Breezeway, where we had all those Pizza Nights last year. Moving stuff around was difficult. I needed Robert’s vehicle to do it.
.
The chilly weather was affecting the pizza dough, it felt like leather. I lit the Breezeway with a 500 watt quartz work light blasting into a large mirror on the wall. The light reflected into the area. The oven took the chill out of the air. There were 7 slices left over so I had pizza for breakfast.

The image is of one of the pies in the Breezeway. The crust came out like a cracker crust, we’ll do better next time.
