Missing in Action

I had trouble recently but it was trouble from afar, but it seems it is coming as news to me from all over the place, I have to wonder if I am immune from the troubles. The Troubles refers to the wars in Ireland and the continuing conflict in their society between the royal crown and the people, between [...]

Can You Spot the Typo?

The days of Autumn are wonderful on the Chesapeake, but in Crisfield it seems like the world has better things to do than visit here, the streets are almost empty, I ride through the intersections on my bike like I'm alone in a ghost town. I still have pain in my hip and lower back, but my stamina is [...]

Winners and Winners

I have to say something about the Russian incursion into Ukraine and the resilience that has thrown them back somewhat. I have both Polish and Ukraine ancestry and the Ukraine portion was Ukraine Cossack. What that means is they were mercenaries who were hired to keep the raiders from the steppes at [...]

Wordily

I awoke promptly at about 10 AM and wished for more sleep. I ended up not frying an omelet for breakfast but having a ham and cheese sandwich on sourdough bread for lunch. The lunar tide was high and I had difficulty getting off the boat with my soreness from the recent overboard incident. After returning [...]

Capitanski Overboard

Eve texted me that she needed help with her kitchen light. I was taking it easy after the ravages of Labor Day weekend. I biked to the wine store, then up to her house. I didn’t bring any electrical tools, I remembered she had most of the things she’d need.

Crisfield Crab Festival

The jet lag takes a while for me to overcome. It starts out waking at 2PM yet feeling lousy, like you want to get a lot more sleep. But the early day lethargy turns into nighttime energy. I’m not falling asleep when I should and I close out the bistro two days in a row. I spend a couple days just [...]

Cap'n Chef Andy | Hot Afternoons, Thunderstorms
I started a new medication, Flomax, which has some beneficial effects for me, my ankles and feet have intermittent swelling due to effects of one of my blood pressure meds, and Flomax works like a diuretic and reduces edema, shrinks the prostate, can lower blood pressure about 10 points, all good effects. It also can cause fainting spells, so I have been taking it easy for the last couple of days. A small hot spell came through which didn’t help. We canned Pizza Night for the first time in a long time, but we did the same last summer, we made other cuisine instead, and in the winter we tried out soup and stew recipes.
.
I valiantly biked to get water and bread at the grocers and on the way back felt fatigued, so stopped in the Boater’s Lounge, a former laundry room that now has the laundry machines taken out, and a large screen TV installed in the corner. It is not a large room and has a sofa, a counter with no cubbard doors on it, probably was a laundry folding table, plus a small table with two chairs. I watched a part of an NFL Greatest Games episode which actually had the NY Jets scoring their greatest score in one quarter, and it happened in that game. I had to drop off my purchases and head out to the wine store, I am buying that pinot noir that I asked for, keep it coming. On the way back I was pooped and needed to stop for a bit. It wasn’t air conditioned on Sunsplash, but I had a fan going, and the day wasn’t too unpleasant. I headed to the Shanty, it was getting on opening time.
.
I sat outside in a nice breeze and relaxed. An Orange Crush drink appeared, unordered, unexpected, but very welcome. I sent a picture of it out to the Bad Crowd. Only Eve showed up and I was glad to have a one on one with her. In a group she tends to take over the conversation, but one to one she spills her guts and allows some return gut spilling. Nice evening with what are now called Andy Burgers. But the chef is also named Andy. He said he used all my dough from the last pizza demo. Would he like more? Yes. Thursday was confirmed as Pizza Night.

If someone discusses family with you, it means you are a trusted friend, or it can mean you are a stranger and they know you don’t know anyone that they know, thus, it won’t get back to them. But, the world is sometimes smaller than you would expect.
.
I feel I need to push myself even more, even though I am pushing right now and not getting much done. I was being urged on by Eve, get up early, maybe even make a list of things to get done, pace yourself, but it’s the hours you put into something that pays off in the end. I just like to get a couple extra sleeps in.
.
We had a front come through that had some violent thunderstorms at night or early morning. It woke me and passed through quickly enough so that I could try to get back to sleep. I did Wordle and sent the result to my daughter in England who is on her way to Ocala. Soon I will be jet setting around. After dutifully reading many entries at notalwaysright.com, I now want to go through the airport in a self powered wheel chair and with a blind man’s cane that I can thwack bystanders with.
.
Cornelia Marie advised me that a package of meds arrived from Canada. I had already asked Eve if I could come up and get another pound of frozen shrimp. I biked up, got the meds, and helped Eve with getting the pups back in the house for their nap. She was frazzled. We sat outside and she had a beer. She had been working since sunup, mowing the back lawn, working
with the puppies’ soiled mats, etc., and string trimming parts of her yard. Wanna mow my front lawn, she asked. Hose the puppy poop off the driveway? I did not jump at these opportunities. She proceeded to hose off the driveway and parking area and of course some of the poopy puppy spray had to come in my direction. It’s only puppy poop, she said. She wanted help with formatting a puppies for sale flyer with the phone number strips that can be torn off.
.
I took the shrimp and the meds back to Sunsplash, boiled water, boiled shrimp, cooled shrimp, enjoyed shrimp cocktail with pinot noir. The local community radio station was playing: “Highway to Hell”. I found a way to make a Puppies for Sale flyer.
.
I have to repeat that I am not a fan of Windows anything and I can do most things with a linux OS. Thus, I have to create a printable document with some photos of labrador puppies, a header, some text, and phone numbers in vertical strips at the bottom that can be torn off by the prospective puppy purchaser.
.
The Open Office app I used is called Impress, and you can insert photos and type text just like you might with any document app. The trick to get the strip of phone numbers at the bottom is to create a document with a double spaced list of the phone number(s), do a print screen, then crop the print screen image, which is .png format, export as .jpg, then insert into the Puppy Flyer, rotate CCW 90 degrees, position at the bottom, export the Puppy Flyer as .pdf. Just about any printer will accept a .pdf file.
.
We didn’t get as far as an acceptable puppy flyer. I was doing a thing like making text, printscreening it, take the screen image and paste it onto another document as an image. Along the way I had to load the image and crop it. She saw a flaw in the text, but now it wasn’t a text file, it was an image file, and I’d have to start all over.
.
Fortunately I ended up on the text file that had the error we wanted to change, and we could change it quickly and then just replenish the folders, starting with the one we were in, and then the changes made it all the way to the finished product. I emailed it to her and she approved. Very well, back to the puppies.
.
Just as human babies are cute, puppy dogs are cute, maybe cuter. Except for other traits common to babies, they eat, sleep, poop, not necessarily in that order. The puppies mother is a first time mother, and her instincts kick in, she looks after them, finding where they are, going to visit each one one at a time.
.
Eve has a couple of empty juice or water jugs, plastic, about 2 liters, and she tossed them into the yard. The mother of the puppies went out and nudged one, her puppies followed. Eve shot a video of two pups trying to overpower a water jug, but I think they roll it over some of their compatriots. The other jug is attacked by an aggressive puppy. He, or she, gets rolled over. The jugs seem to be winning.
.
The remainder of the Bad Crowd texted that the next destination is the Legion. I rode with Eve and we got wine, ice, and an outside table. Cuddily, Teri, and Cornelia Marie, with Nori the wonder dog, arrived. We ordered various flavors of chicken wings and more wine. We finished well before sunset and I returned with Eve to pick up my bike and head to the marina. Then the sunset blazed in the West. It was time to call Hawaii, my older brother still had a sore throat from his stay in ICU with a heart attack. He sounded fine except he couldn’t talk much.
.
The next day Eve printed out the flyer and we took a copy to post at the Tractor Supply in Pocomoke. I also shopped for groceries and a zester. I had a recipe for salmon cracker spread, calling for juice and zest of a lemon. There is also finely chopped fresh dill, mayo and cream cheese. I made it the next day.
.
Eve made her mussels with linguine recipe, sauce made from scratch, simmered for a long time. Instead of linguine we had toasted baguette rounds that were perfect to soak up the sauce, Provencal.
.
I eventually made the salmon cracker spread, very easy to make, lemony flavor. Too much lemon. I then got the idea to try a bagel spread, like lox and cream cheese. I found a Martha Stewart recipe. I’ll try that next time, and I’ll get some bagels. Gotta shake up breakfast.
.
My problem with air travel from here is that the local airport, Salisbury, only has a few flights to the regional hub Charlotte. My itinerary has me flying out at about a quarter to 7 in the morning and laying over in Charlotte for 8 hours. The airport is 30 miles away from Crisfield. Getting a later flight would cost $300-400 more, and the cost of a one way flight is about the same. I ended up with a solution, take the airport shuttle, $85 cost, dependable service.
.
The image is of the Puppy Flyer.
