Rothkoesque

Something I had said a while back about the NY Jets roster, with a roster of elite players, if the team should fail, it will be on the coaches. They have the means at their disposal to win against any other team. On Sunday the Cowboys destroyed them. I blame it on the coaches.

Crab Capital (not)

Sunday dinner was Shepherd's Pie at Cuddily's home on the water. Wine and Irish whiskey flowed. It was a very nice evening and my return to the marina was very late. I called my older brother in Hawaii an hour later than my usual time. The Dallas Cowboys were visiting the New York Giants for a rainy [...]

One of the items that came in from TEMU is an inexpensive rice cooker. It is actually a kind of slow cooker with two settings, 600 and 200 watts. The higher wattage is to get it boiling and the lower wattage is to slow cook. Supposedly it has a temperature limit control that automatically shuts it [...]

An additional note about the Venus de Milo Seafood Chowder: the lobster, shrimp, and scallops are cooked separately and reserved, then added to the soup at the end. This way each piece of seafood retains its own unique flavor. Also the roux should be made with the clam stock before adding the tomato [...]

A Naughty-cal Eatery

I had a lot of difficulty posting my last post. Because the internet is so weak in the marina, I have to use my phone to post to the blog. Photos are edited on the laptop, so I would bluetooth the photo from the phone to the laptop, do what I had to do using GIMP, export from GIMP to desktop, save [...]

Two days of high humidity and afternoons of severe thunderstorms, that starts off our week. It only got up to about 93 but humidity, the roasting on an unairconditioned boat, and visions of the deserts of Lawrence of Arabia come to mind.

Pilot Gas Rip Off

Cap'n Chef Andy | Chilly AM Warm PM
The big trip up to Crisfield did not go precisely as planned. Waiting in line at the Jacksonville airport for an hour and a half made my sore hip even sorer. Back at the boatyard I began stuffing the car with things I thought I might need.
.
I spent all the next day packing the car and the next morning left at 9:15. The car, which was charged to me as a full gas tank needed 3.4 gallons to top it off after just a 30 mile drive from the airport.
.
The trip according to Google maps should take about 11 hours to cover 700 miles. I had my galaxy S20+ paired with the car and received a couple of calls as well as had the phones Google maps displayed on the car’s touchscreen display. The type C USB cable wouldn’t charge the phone, but it normally lasts all day on a charge.
.
When I got to Florence, SC, it was time to get more fuel, not because I was empty, but because fuel prices in North Carolina were reported to be high. I stopped at Pilot store #337, pump #4, and put in 10.935 gallons of 87 octane, at a price of 3.359/gal. The bill was $42.20, hey, wait a minute, 10 gallons would be $33.59 and my purchase should have been around $37. I went inside and complained and they said they couldn’t do anything about it. After quite a bit of cajoling they gave me a customer service number which put me on hold for quite a while. The 5 dollar rip off wasn’t worth what I was going through, but how could I let them perpetuate this scam. Everyone who comes through that pump and buys 87 octane will be charged 50 cents more a gallon. If it wasn’t such an egregious error I wouldn’t have noticed it. I finally got someone to put in a credit for me and maybe I’ll receive it in a few days. The personnel at the gas station did nothing, not even a sign on the pump. Evil.
.
The was about a half hour delay. I had also endured a 40 minute delay from construction South of Emporia and a 20 minute delay after that one. At Emporia I took Rte. 58 to Virginia Beach. My phone ran out of juice and died. Well, I figured, I know the way, it shouldn’t be too hard to get to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel at Virginia Beach. I followed the signs to Virginia Beach.
.
At Virginia Beach I found myself driving North along the beachfront and then West on Rte. 60, where is the Bridge Tunnel? I stopped at a Food Lion, got breakfast fixings and asked how to get to the bridge. I was about 5 minutes away but I have wasted a lot of time driving around that town.
.
Over the bridge and on my way to Pocomoke where I hoped I could get a charger for my phone at Walmart. By the time I got there I had been on the road over 13 hours. I got my charger and then drove to Crisfield, about 20 miles, on local roads. By the time I checked into the marina and got aboard it was past midnight.
.
The image is of the car’s display screen showing the route from St. Marys to Crisfield.
