Important events of the past week. Fixing Teri’s phone.
.
It was stupid, Cuddily couldn’t call Teri because she was blocked on Teri’s phone. She would call me and then I would call Teri who could call her back or we would just all meet up together at the Legion. Teri would laugh about it, but when no one could call her, panic set in. Cuddily called me and I also could not call Teri.
.
It was maybe 9 PM and I thought we should not panic just yet, deal with it during the daytime. What a stupid idea.
.
Someone called the local non-emergency police hot line to have a wellness check at Teri’s house. Teri was able to call out, apparently, and we ended up on a 3-way call. She remarked about the policemen visit. We talked about buying her a new phone in Pocomoke and we could have lunch at that place by the water there.
.
The next day it was agreed that we would set out at 1 PM from Teri’s house. We had to see if she had an old fashioned land line, which I thought she did, or if she had one of those internet phone bundles, which could also be the case.
.
It turned out she had two phones, one an old but sophisticated land line, like a business phone, and an old internet bundle phone which no longer worked and was like a piece of dead metal. However, its central button was “Block Call”. It would be so easy to accidentally block a caller without realizing it. However, the phone was very dead and had nothing to connect to, Teri’s modem was not serviced by that phone manufacturer. I surmised she had accidentally blocked Cuddily some time ago.
.
Cuddily called the phone service provider to talk to customer service and ended up with a non-AI, well it was AI but not helpful, after getting out of that conversation I was able to ask her to call Teri’s phone. She did and it rang. I waited. It rang again. Now I was able to call her too.
.
While Cuddily was dealing with customer non-service I was googling things like phone blocking from a land line phone. There is a function called Anonymous Caller Blocking, or something like that. It’s *77 and will block anyone calling
who does not provide caller ID data. *87 turns it off and that’s what I tried. It worked. I don’t think *77 was ever entered into the land line phone, I think maybe the other phone had done the accidental call blocking, but it remained until now.
.
I have a knack for being patient with these devices and maybe getting them to work. It could have well been that the problem would have gone on without resolution. She will end up with a new phone anyway. Her old phones are too old.
.
The question remains what are we going to do this weekend after our two successful parties the past two weekends. Pizza Night and Taco Night. It looks like we will have the weekend off. The marina event coordinator didn’t have anything planned. There is an airshow in Ocean City.
.
The weather has been hot and muggy due to South winds. I didn’t want to cook. When we went to the Legion to celebrate victory over the phones, I made a poke bowl kind of salad with diced chicken, seaweed salad, diced seeded tomatoes, thin sliced cucumber, avocado, and fine chopped lettuce. I used my vinaigrette dressing with some mayo and dash of sesame oil. It was good. The Legion is better for wine than food.
.
The next day I spent time following the US Open golf tournament and taking it easy. It was 90 degrees in the boat cabin. I could go to the air conditioned boater’s lounge and watch the golf there. I also watched some Alain de Cadenet videos about sports cars. Some political “breaking news” seemed to be popping up on YouTube, mostly outrage against the latest ICE arrests. There are some administration postings and press conferences that reiterate what is obvious, they are forcibly detaining and deporting people who are not legal residents. They certainly seem sloppy about it. It is an authoritarian administration.
.
Some of the protests are local and represent the reality of the immigrants in this country, they either have some sort of legal documentation or are recorded and have to report to immigration officials regularly to maintain their status as undocumented residents. It’s no crime if you are following the rules. Now they are being whisked away without any consideration. It’s like we have a messy country with immigrants and orange haired Mother is going to clean it up for us. I think the problem exists because it is political fodder on both sides. The way to clean it up is not to “kill the roaches”, they are not vermin, society needs to function properly to allow inclusion. We want talented smart people to come into this country and help us keep up at the forefront. Otherwise we will fade away.
.
I like chopping vegetables, but I’d rather not work in the fields.
.
The problem with bullying is that there is always a reaction to it. Don’t rile up the sleeping dog. Aaron Rodgers said, “Don’t Poke the Bear”. The reactions can be immediate and simple or things can percolate and come back later. When I remark, “Let them eat cake”, alluding to the 32 doll versus 2 doll Christmas, remember that one, I get asked who said that. It was Marie Antoinette. Queen of France. They have no bread, let them eat cake. She was beheaded along with Louis the XVI. A lot of people were beheaded then.
.
Easiest way to kill me is to let me sail my boat.
.
The Statue of Liberty came along to us from France, thanking us for our leadership in the quest for liberty, some time later, after we had our bloodiest war, killing each other, but most dying of disease and poor medical care of non-lethal wounds.
.
The Eiffel Tower is a monument in Paris that was sold two or three times by a scoundrel, con artist, who posted a discrete ad in the newspaper and interviewed interested parties in a hush-hush debacle that the Paris government didn’t know what to do with the tower, the maintenance was oppressive, and they couldn’t just do away with it, there would be public outrage. Thus the discrete ad, the interviews with respected business men who knew how to make a buck, especially from the government, those fools. The con man received the expected bribes, anonymous of course, please let me be the one who takes down the Eiffel Tower. He absconds with the money. Lay low for a while.
.
He finds out there is no public fuss, nothing at all. No one in the business community has raised an eyebrow. So, he came back and did it again, and maybe a third time. Those fools.
.
My scheme is even more perfect. Listen, Mr. Trump hates New York, especially the city, and they have that French statue of a woman sitting right there where his statue ought to be. I don’t like his attitude, but he is president, and if he wants to replace the statue with a different statue, there is a way to do it, but it will cost a whole lot of money. You have to have another rehab of the existing statue and then voila, the new statue. There is a lot of expensive engineering, design, plus you have to kind of hide what you’re doing, make it look like a renovation. But the final statue has to be like made out of gold or something that looks like it.
.
Have you ever seen any of the James Bond films, like the one with Goldfinger? I think about that a lot right now. The thieves that stole a golden toilet in England have been sentenced to jail time. How dare they.
.
The image is of a thundercloud above Somers Cove Marina, in Crisfield, MD.
I don’t actually have to try to perpetrate this scheme, the one with the gold DJT statue, but to start an internet presence of it probably wouldn’t be that hard to do. Everything and anything can go viral. Just post an enlarged, and I mean it would have to be enlarged, sculpture of our president, golden colored, and photoshopped onto Liberty’s pedestal.
.
When I went on Saachiart.com to find something I could use, I didn’t find anything I could use, but I saw some amusing paintings, not much sculpture.
.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Crisfield, Maryland’s Trumpiest Town, still supports him even after he rescinded the 37 or 38 million dollar flood mitigation project that would have transformed a city that is going to get flooded to death, but not only that, that project was just a part of a project that addressed a lot of issues of the Chesapeake. Many communities are affected. I suppose you have to cut spending and increase revenue if you want to balance the budget. Last president to do it was Bill Clinton.
.
Not much has changed in Washington. You have a big deficit. Your economy has been the best in the world. Trillions of dollars. Other economies are practicing austerity while we continue to soar. But wait. If you have a lot of debt, maybe you cut some spending, but you want to cut your debt, consolidate loans, that sort of thing. Unfortunately you have upturned the economy and dropped the country’s bond rating down a few points. Refinance is going to cost more than just staying the course. What about income? No, we’re going to cut the income tax on the wealthiest, they don’t have to pay. The tariffs will take care of that, the foreign countries will pay.
.
Uh oh. Maybe if you invade and conquer Mexico the price of avocados won’t go up. Better get your guacamole and margarita now,
.
I want to make something different for the weekend. Maybe I won’t have to. Not that I don’t mind. I don’t have some driving need to cook or make something. Only a feeble pizza idea. It’s better to wait in these periods of lack of initiative and don’t even try to make anything come to the surface. We will have some thunderstorms.
.
The transient yachts that are coming into the marina are impressive and I guess they will all go to the Fisherman’s Grille, right next to the marina. I hope they get better service and food than we have, over a few years now. I think we have to go back again. Not have a preconceived notion that “this place is bad”. Maybe have a couple of drinks and maybe an appetizer. That’s what we always say. Attitude is Everything, dammit. The food might not be genuinely bad this time. It’s hard to run a restaurant. A taco truck would be nice, I guess.
.
I was stranded onboard when an unusually high tide made the mooring lines so taut that I couldn’t bring the boat to the finger pier close enough to step off onto a tippy footstool. I wanted to watch the end of the 4th round of the US Open golf tournament. I was stranded on board. I could look at updates of the scores at pgatour.com. What? Play is suspended due to weather.
.
When play was resumed, the tide had ebbed a bit and I was able to watch the end of the tournament. In the final stretch no one was under par. This is unusual as most golf matches are way under par, typically a double digit under par will win. Here it was a monster of a golf course and it seemed like all the big names were dropping back, some not making the cut. Meanwhile the steady unflashy golfers were staying close to par. There were some memorable shots made. Patrick Read hit an albatross, that’s a double eagle. A birdie is one under par, and eagle is two under par, and an albatross is a three under par. On one hole. Read hit his second shot on a par 5 and it went in. He couldn’t even see it go in from where he hit it. He stood there with his arms up, like questioning, and then he pointed his index finger down, like into the hole The crowd roared and he knew he had sunk the shot Only the 4th time in US Open history. There was also a hole in one by Perez.
.
In the final few holes they were all tied at 1 over par or 2 over par. One by one they dropped out, bogeys. JJ Spaun birdied the last two holes to go one under par and win. His putt on the last hole was something like 64 feet, the longest made putt in the tournament.
.
Golf and Ice Hockey are the two most difficult sports.
