Anaho, Nuku Hiva

08 May 2018 | Anaho, Nuku Hiva

Anaho would be the perfect setting for King Kong or Jurassic Park. Steep craggy cliffs, jungle, and a beach with coconut palms. A few houses, no road, some horses. Johan, a 10 - 12 year old boy accompanied us on the trail riding his uncle's horse. We talked to the uncle as well and he told us there lived about 20 people in the bay - I'm glad I know some French even if it is rusty, without it we could not communicate, they do not like to speak English. Between the sailboats in the bay and the beach there is a coral reef with an amazing amount of beautiful fish. Not as clear as we would have liked but we are once again enjoying being able to snorkel and free dive.

We are in the tropics now. Yesterday it pretty much rained all day. The rain clouds hang heavy over the steep cliffs. The fruit that we bought at the market has now ripened and white larva are starting to crawl out - this is organic food! We found 3 big cockroaches in the cock pit - hopefully they had not started a family yet. I put out poison but a boat is hard to keep bug free once it is infested. The adventure is just starting.

Over all we were lucky with good constant wind although it did not always take us in the right direction. Only minor breakdowns, a furling line, the head, rudder shaft leak, propane locker leak and holding tank pump out leak. Nothing we could not fix temporarily under way and fix more permanently here in Nuku Hiva. The most difficult part of the journey for me was the constant violent motion that throws you off balance, and make cooking a dangerous extreme sport. We had swells coming from three directions most of the time and when they added together to one mega wave it really threw us off.
