Body surfing and Bbq

10 May 2018 | Anaho, Nuku Hiva
Marie Delight
We spent a week in Anaho bay. We did a couple of hikes one over to another bay where Guy could go body surfing and the beach was covered with mounds big enough for a good eating size crabs to have built. The opening of the holes were about 3 inches. We also went to a barbeque arranged by a couple with a small hostel on the beach. They puts on a bbq when there are enough cruisers around. Breadfruit and lobster salad, bbqd goat and pig. Simple but good it cost us $25 usd with a beer per person and we got to meet the other cruisers in the bay and also the guests in the hostel. The guests were a local couple from Taiohae, he worked in the lab at the hospital and came from France and she worked in the mayors office and was in the local dance group she had even been to San Diego to perform, the other guest was a plucky girl from Switzerland that just finished an internship in a hotel on Morea another island closer to Tahiti. Now she was traveling and hiking the islands until her money runs out.

Over all we were lucky with good constant wind although it did not always take us in the right direction. Only minor breakdowns, a furling line, the head, rudder shaft leak, propane locker leak and holding tank pump out leak. Nothing we could not fix temporarily under way and fix more permanently here in Nuku Hiva. The most difficult part of the journey for me was the constant violent motion that throws you off balance, and make cooking a dangerous extreme sport. We had swells coming from three directions most of the time and when they added together to one mega wave it really threw us off.

Guy bought a Nordic Folkboat in 1980 and we sailed it around in the Stockholm archipelago for a few summers.
