Waterfall and chocolate

23 May 2018 | Hakahetau, Ua Pou

Hakahetau, Ua Pou Another beautiful bay in paradise. This bay has a hike to a waterfall and a little further into the jungle an eccentric German making chocolate. He has created his own secluded paradise an hours walk from the village. He built all the buildings himself, leveled the land and planted fruit trees. He is making his own energy, using solar power and after 3pm water power with a waterwheel. He is growing cocoa beans and makes chocolate from scratch. And the chocolate is fantastic, it has a taste of the jungle. He also has an abundance of fruit trees, Pamplemousse, guava, mango, papaya, bananas, coconuts, macadamia nuts etc, etc. as well as tobacco, coffee, black pepper and I don't know what else. It is all very neat and tidy and manicured almost like a fairy tale. He has horses, probably a hundred chicken, 23 cats and 2 dogs all running free on the property. He is quite a character and has a lot of stories to tell. He left East Germany in hie 30's to become a helicopter pilot in Tahiti where he placed electric cables. Later on he married Therese in Ua Pou and built his farm on her family land. Manfred must be in his 70's and still going strong. He is inviting campers to camp on his property for a small fee and he has great hopes for the Marquesan festival December 2019.

Over all we were lucky with good constant wind although it did not always take us in the right direction. Only minor breakdowns, a furling line, the head, rudder shaft leak, propane locker leak and holding tank pump out leak. Nothing we could not fix temporarily under way and fix more permanently here in Nuku Hiva. The most difficult part of the journey for me was the constant violent motion that throws you off balance, and make cooking a dangerous extreme sport. We had swells coming from three directions most of the time and when they added together to one mega wave it really threw us off.
