Land Ho!

04 June 2018 | At sea
Marie Delight
Guy spotted land! A skinny comb of coconut trees 10 miles off. How exciting! At the speed we are sailing we will reach the pass into Hao late this evening. We will have to heave-to over night and enter at slack tide which is around 1100 am tomorrow. It will be our first attempt to enter an atoll. The currents run strong in and out of the passes and timing is critical. It will also be a first at anchoring around coral where you can easily tangle up your anchor. So far our passage weather has been variable, we have had long stretches of favorable wind, then some not so favorable either squally or no wind at all. The calm comes with the benefit that we can jump in the water and go swimming. Deep blue water exceptionally clear and probably more than 5000ft deep. It is an amazing feeling. I got a scare from a squall this morning. I was admiring the beautiful rainbows all around us and taking pictures early in the morning, when we got a down- burst of wind 20knots tilting Notre Reve to her side, then a down poor of rain and continued strong winds for about 5-10 min. It was a classic picture of a squall but unexpected and we had all the sail set with no reefs.

Over all we were lucky with good constant wind although it did not always take us in the right direction. Only minor breakdowns, a furling line, the head, rudder shaft leak, propane locker leak and holding tank pump out leak. Nothing we could not fix temporarily under way and fix more permanently here in Nuku Hiva. The most difficult part of the journey for me was the constant violent motion that throws you off balance, and make cooking a dangerous extreme sport. We had swells coming from three directions most of the time and when they added together to one mega wave it really threw us off.

Guy bought a Nordic Folkboat in 1980 and we sailed it around in the Stockholm archipelago for a few summers.
