This is where it all started. Not really, but it is a good starting point. In 1997, I ran across a listing in "The Log" for a 1963 Columbia Challenger that was being sold in a lien sale. After contacting Lee, the boat yard manager, I made arrangements to see the boat and ended up buying it for the amount of the outstanding yard bill; about $600. I could go into a long story about my boat, Shelter Point Boatyard and all the characters that made Berth 41A their home, but that is a story for another day.

Today's story is about the transformation the area has undergone. Shortly after I left Shelter Point, the Port of Long Beach went about renovating Berth 41; which included tearing out a large section of land, eliminating 4 dilapidated marinas, a couple of boat yards and then rebuilding the whole area. IMO a definite improvement; however there is something to be said about tying up to a dock that used to be a former Coast Guard station during the 60's and listening to the old docks creak at night. I miss what was and could have been, but the future is bright and this is the year.

Anyway, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a then and now for your viewing pleasure. The push pin titled Fiesta was the name of my boat and where it was located.
