Mast removal 2

Guess you can only post one picture per entry. Here's the trailer.

Mast removal

15 June 2009
Currently we are replacing the wooden masts with aluminum masts. The replacement masts and booms were purchased used at various places on Oahu. The wooden masts had been removed from the boat formerly by previous owners, but we don't know if the bronzed mast step had ever been removed. Much to our surprise, there was a 1924 silver dollar under the mast step. No way of knowing if this was placed there by a previous owner or the shipyard! I suspect it will be good karma to place it under the new mast step that is under construction. And we'll probably add a good luck coin or two of our own.

Moving and/or replacing all of the rigging from wooden masts to aluminum masts is turning into quite a challenge, not the least of which is fabricating a new mast step. We are going with a pivoting mast, which should make removal easier next time it is needed. The new mast step has been designed. We are now trying to find someone to weld together the aluminum pieces. At least one welder has said that he doesn't do marine work. Sheesh, it's just metal pieces in a bucket, he wouldn't even need to see the boat!

Also removing the masts in the slip was quite a challenge. My husband created an "erector set" out of metal tubing and an extra boom, all bolted together in a trailer made out of a pickup bed. Worked like a charm! Luckily when we got to the pier in the morning, all of the parking places had been coned off for painting. So we didn't have to worry about damage to cars parked near us. We were able to remove both masts by ourselves (with just a little help from friends who wandered by - thanks Wally and Mike).

Aloha! Mariner 32, hull #45, purchased from Robert Arvin early 2005. Purchased at Keehi Marine Center, in Keehi Lagoon, on Oahu. Moved her around to her permanent slip in Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor, in Kaneohe Bay 6/30/05. Thanks to Billy and Tom for crewing.

An ongoing project, will post more later.
