snowbird loons
05 December 2014 | n myrtle beach, SC

the past three days have been very productive with about 200 miles under our hull. we returned to new bern and did a few boat chores before heading out to beaufort on a sail/motor. anchored next to the coast guard station with plans to head out early but alas we overslept (no surprise there). awoke to very thick fog and were no longer certain we weren't in maine. our confusion was increased when we heard loons on our way out to sea. when the sun finally came out around 3pm we knew we weren't in maine anymore dorothy but about to head into masonboro inlet and anchor in wrightsville beach.
another early start, at least for us, and back into the ditch. pretty boring but the waterbirds compensate a bit for the noise of the engine. saw many more loons in their drab winter clothes but were unable to recognize any from attean lake or lake st george. we'll have to ask our loons in maine next spring where they spent the winter. caught some favorable current and hit 11 knots which allowed us to get to barefoot marina and meet our friend jill for a tour of her new house, community and share dinner. hopefully we can stop in the spring and actually see things in the daylight.
