Autumn Update

It is Indian Summer, and we are in the process of closing up our home in the beautiful mountainous and plan for our annual migratory trek to be on S/V Karma. It's been an adventurous Summer vagabonding around, tending to the Orchard, visiting family and friends out East and enjoying the east coast. You can catch a ray of our journey as we prepare to travel down the Cali Seaboard to be back in Guatemala! let the journey begin! ~~

Strange tropical fruit make me happy!

There is no end to exotic fruit in tropical Guatemala. From one day to the next the selection changes.  The nice thing about Guatemala is that Each time I go to town I'm surprised by something new! The other nice thing is that it's so cheap! Although they have fruit you'll recognize such as mango, pineapple, [...]

Boat Maintenance...ugh!

15 January 2013 | Rio Dulce, Guatemala
James/Sunny and Nice!
Today was supposed to be a relax day. I have a little bit of heat rash and travelling in crowded minibuses aggravates it. Yesterdays excursion to Morales was a little crowded at times, and so we figured that we would take a break today.

(ok, in hindsight, perhaps not everyone wants to read about this kind of stuff, but there is a dedicated following of boat maintenance people out there, and this kind of stuff is riveting to us, so if you aren't into boat gunk, skip this chapter...besides, in six months I can go back and remember what I did)

However...the septic tank is still emitting a slight odour, and this morning Karma gave me a little bite on the shin (bumped my knee on the doorway, drawing blood) to remind me to fix the couple of things that were bugging her to get fixed, particularly her underbits (ie: the bilge)

The old strap to pull the trash pump together snapped the other day when I took it apart, so I have kludged together a temporary fix to keep it intact for now.

I used a stainless steel hose clamp, which fit around the broken flange nicely. Tightened to a snug fit, and presto, done. Easy except for the messy sewage treatment compartment, which got a good bleach and clean as well.

I also glued some loose woodwork, and fixed the step that I broke in my rush leaving for Cancun.

Ok, so now back to relaxing with a gin and tonic. "Necesito una bolsa de hielo, por favor..."
