Heading West

19 August 2018 | Plymouth
On the high seas again after a quiet period. M&N have been busy with various things and we have just done a few local sails. This included Babbacombe where we anchored in peace and sunshine only for jet skis to appear and think it funny to go blasting around the anchorage close to the boats. M now wanting to mount cannons on my bow. We also anchored in the River Dart off Dartmouth town quay. It was lovely but strange for M&N to be able to look up and see their house. Neighbours obviously check what is happening on the river as Denise mentioned a few days later that she had seen us through her binoculars.
Anyway, M&N had a busy few weeks in Stockholm, Cheshire, Gloucestershire and the South East. This included completing walking the Ridgeway long distance footpath and a fun trip on the Thames from Staines to Marlow.
Back to the present, we left Brixham on Friday and had a lively motor sail into the wind around Start Point and a very bumpy ride around Prawle Point into Salcombe. It was busy with the regatta and we moored up against a 40ft racing Beneteau First on a buoy. A lovely spot and great to see all the activity but still very windy and a noisy night.
M&N dinghied to shore the next day (the outboard started second pull) and spent the morning wandering around Salcombe. We rode the afternoon tide and motor sailed across Bigbury Bay to Plymouth. Still pretty windy (on the nose) but not as much as yesterday and the sun was shining on that stunning part of the Devon coast. We moored in Queen Anne’s Battery marina (a sister marina to Brixham so no berthing charge) for 2 nights in Plymouth.
Weather and everything else permitting we hope to get the early tide tomorrow to go to Fowey. It is regatta week there so probably sharing mooring buoys again. M&N were talking to some fellow Malo-owners in the marina this morning and they mentioned that Fowey regatta is fun and includes a giant pasty being ferried across the river. Maybe M can get a bite as it goes past.
Plans beyond Fowey include Falmouth and the Helford River and hopefully some untrodden parts of the South West Coast Path for M&N as well as good sailing. Updates to follow.
Best wishes to all.
