Falmouth via Fowey regatta
25 August 2018 | Falmouth
M&N’s alarm went off at 05:00 on Wednesday. Rain spattering on the roof and wind howling through the rigging so a quick look out and an easy decision not to catch the early tide to Fowey. A few jobs and shopping in Plymouth while the weather improved, and M&N decided to head out to Cawsand in the afternoon to catch the next morning early tide. We anchored in the lovely sheltered bay there in the south west of Plymouth Sound.
Next morning we motor sailed (wind on the nose) round to Fowey. Lots of dolphins and porpoises on the way. Off Looe the fish were running and every dolphin and porpoise in the area were converging for a fish breakfast. They were joined by squadrons of gannets dive-bombing the fish. Quite a wildlife extravaganza.
We picked up a mooring buoy in Fowey and enjoyed the spectacle of the yacht racing and entertainment of the Fowey regatta and carnival. Fowey was busy and the dinghy dock manic.
Next day M&N caught a bus to Mevagissey and walked 13 miles of the South West Coast Path back to Par Sands which they had reached from the other direction last year. While they were out I was joined on our mooring buoy by a very nice family complete with spaniel. M&N had a nice chat with them when they got back. They had a wildlife extravaganza off Looe too.
Next morning the tide and wind were good for an enjoyable sail to Falmouth. As we closed in on Falmouth we had to turn into the wind which had picked up to a force 6 and it was a lively motor sail to Falmouth Marina.
I am in the marina for a week while M&N return to Dartmouth for a couple of Dart Sailability events. M&N hired a car as bank holiday public transport is not good, and made worse by a train strike. M&N are also taking the opportunity to go to Gloucester for a day to catch up with family.
I am looking forward to M&N coming back next week. We hope to do some nice sailing around Falmouth and the Helford River. M&N hope to do a few more “untrodden” miles of the South West Coast Path. We are all looking forward to the arrival of Jon, Linda and Ezzie in early September for some sailing, walking and exploring.
Bye for now me ‘ansums (I am learning Cornish from the boat next door).
