Chesapeake VA to Belhaven, NC

25 November 2017 | Alligator-Pungo canal (20 miles)
We left Atlantic Yacht Basin on Wednesday, determined to move south, hoping for no further boat issues. John bought a space heater so we were toasty, rested, and ready to go!

The Intercoastal waterway (ICW) isn't what we imagined in that much if it is like a canal, with tree stumps along the edges ( not boat friendly) and 2 way traffic of some really big boats & barges. Our boat draws 5 feet, ICW depths are mostly 12 feet along " the magenta line"- straight down the middle. Add cypress stamps, shoaling, and a 60 x 150 ft barge, ...... and our depth finder (new) decides not to work.....it gets interesting.
We stayed at Coinjock Marina Wed night- we could plug into electricity for heat and decided to stay for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday.
All you can eat- $17.99. Not kidding. There were mounds of pine tree branches on the dock and, of course, my mind went to Christmas and holiday crafts. How wrong was I? No no, these are used to camouflage the boats for duck hunting- 'cause that's whatcha do in Coinjock'.
The temps have been dropping to the 30's at night, hence the marina visits, but we were both feeling like we have to get a move on!
Off the dock at 7:30 Friday morning for the most desolate 50 miles! The land is flat marsh, the water is 53 degrees, no leaves in the trees, and everything is brown including the brackish water. We anchored just off the ICW in the middle of who knows where- seriously, no man's land. The temp only dropped to the low 40's and (lucky for me), I have a hot husband- literally.
When it's that cold, any heat (just breathing, and cooking) causes condensation- so little droplets of water may fall into your sleeping face. One more reason to get south....
We travelled through the Alligator-Pungo river canal ( saw lots of eagles) and are now at the Dowry Creek marina in Belhaven NC. This marina only charges $1/ ft, has free laundry, nice showers/bathrooms, and a courtesy car to get to town. It was a beautiful day, our little space heater is happily working, and we're anticipating a longer day tomorrow to the Neuse River (still NC).
(As an aside, for those of you who know me well...... our depth finder has stopped working 3 times now, and on the ICW it is at least as important as charts. I am wearing my mother's ring for this trip for good luck, etc. Each time our depth finder pooped out, I held that ring and asked for help from my guardian angels (family).... each time the depth finder started working. Just notable... just sayin'
Be well family & friends! Thanks for following!
