To Puerto Lucia

20 April 2008
Roger
Trip log: 2967 nautical miles. We left Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristobal island, yesterday (Saturday) just after 8 am in the morning. I decided to head west, then south, around the island as the port is very near the western end of the island. The engine temperature alarm sounded about 45 minutes out. After diving to clear the intake did not fix the problem, we discovered another disintegrated impeller and installed a new one... the second in this trip. The passage around the end of the island took some time in choppy seas and an adverse current. We have been fighting an adverse current for much of the time since. All of the forecast winds are from ESE to SW, and yet yesterday they seemed to be mostly easterly and we were pushed to the north, so this morning we tacked south and watched the distance to our destination remain the same for 6 hours. By mid afternoon the wind came around enough to allow us to point almost to our target.

We've had swallow-tail gulls with us at night. During the day, we've had a lone wave albatross nearby. It flies ahead and lands on the water a little to the side of our track, then when we're well past it takes off again, soars over the water for a while, then repeats the landing ahead of us. Apart from flying fish and a large school of very fast moving feeding dolphins, we've seen little else. The weather has been fine, with puffy tropical clouds and no thunderstorms.

It is now 10:30 pm on Sunday and we have a little over 400 nautical miles to go to Puerto Lucia/Salinas on mainland Ecuador.
