Bluewater marina to Fitzroy Island

Bluewater marina/Cairns to Fitzroy Island.
The day finally arrived, May 30th 2016. After sitting in the marina for 6 months, avoiding the cyclone season, a trip back to NZ for Scott & Laura’s wedding, a working stint, myself in Mt Isa & Gerd on a Cruise Liner and lots of jobs completed on Kestrel, we are now about to set sail again.
With a rebuilt motor we set sail to Fitzroy Island, which is about 15 NM east of Cairns. We had southerly winds up to 23 knots. We motored sailed all the way, anchoring about 1500hrs. We were happy with our lazy jack which we constructed while in the marina, it worked well, allowing the main to drop in a more controlled/safe manner.
Having been anchored for 3 days, I am still getting my sea legs, this morning was not a good start to the day, as the spew bucket had to come out, and that’s before breakfast. Just when I thought I was coming right. It’s not the nicest anchorage here, with swells and wind hitting us from both directions causing a horrible side rocking motion. Today we are experiencing wind gust up to 16/18 knots. Causing us to dance on our anchor. I have my ‘sea bands” on both wrists.
We did venture onto land yesterday. There is a resort & pool, camping ground (with no washing machines, grrrrr was so hoping there was going to be one there) , bar, diving/snorkelling/kayak hire shop and a small store with very limited supplies. There are several walks which we plan to explore at a later date. The water is nice and clear. We swam off the boat yesterday. We are yet to get out our snorkelling gear and explore the coral reef.
After being in the marina and on shore power and running water freely available, we have to now change our mind set, and conserve water, power, and provisions. Manage our rubbish and most importantly re-wear cloths, hand washing is hard work :(
New provisions we are trying for the trip include home brew, sauerkraut, and marinated feta cheese. Will keep you posted how these turn out.
Our plan is to remain anchored here and explore the Island and do lots of snorkelling and diving, fishing, with some day trips to the outer reef. With no time pressures present, we will stay here for as long or as little as we like. For anyone who would like to visit us out here, there is a ferry from Cairns to Fitzroy Island. Feel free to visit. We have mobile coverage here, so are contactable.
Cheers
Julie & Gerd.
