Still seeking sunshine

It has been over 30 days since we left Bellingham. I can’t believe that so much time has already passed since our journey began. On Tuesday we were able to sail for much of the day. We left Half Moon Bay for one of our shortest legs yet with a 5 hour trip to Moss Landing. The winds were coming from the northwest and we had a great downwind sail from about 11:00 until 5:00--or in boat speak 1100 to 1700 ;-). It felt good to turn the motor off and set the sails. It was also much better for our sailing kitty which with neither of us working is important!

Moss Landing is about half way between Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay. I called the Elkhorn Yacht Club to see about reciprocal moorage and was told that there was already a 46' sailboat at their guest dock but we were welcome to tie up next to the pump out station. When I hesitated he said that they have people stay there all the time and that they don't get any complaints. Well…I'm thinking that the pump out station is like those at home, a white box about 4x6 that contains a portable pump out. As we got closer to the dock it looked like there was a boat in the space until Kevin saw that it was a pump out station just a little different than the one I was thinking of. It was a 35 foot big, green, floating machine. We tied up to it anyway and although it ruined my thought of having a nice evening in the cockpit since it was sunny outside-- it wasn't too bad from the cabin of the boat. It did make me smile though when I looked out the galley window as I was cooking to see that I voluntarily docked there just to save a few dollars! My, how things have changed since neither of us is working any longer.

The remainder of the week put us in Monterey Bay where we anchored. The bay is open to the ocean swell so we didn’t get much sleep that night. We had some things we needed to take care for the Tayana so we really didn’t spend much time exploring. From Monterey we headed for San Simeon which is a nice anchorage in a picture perfect setting. We awoke to sunshine and for the first time this trip were able to sit in the cockpit and enjoy our coffee. Oh, so very nice. No relaxing for long though as we would like to get further south as quickly as possible so on we went. Next stop was San Luis Obispo Bay. It was a nice sunny day until about 100 yards before entering the bay and the fog just rolled in off the land. It was so thick after we tied up to a mooring buoy that I felt like I had to take the portable VHF into shore with us because it also has GPS coordinates on it. Although we were able to find our way back by using the channel markers it was comforting to know that I had an almost exact location written down and would be able to find our boat if needed!

The picture is of us still in our warm clothes...in Sunny California.
