Leaving Cabo
06 December 2011 | Cabo San Lucas

We leave for Los Frailes in the morning which is about 45 miles north. Cabo has been nice, the weather wonderful, we’ve been kayaking, snorkeling, walking, shopping and as Kevin mentioned saying 'No Gracias' a ton of times trying to make our way around town. Cabo is geared towards tourists and spending money and the locals try to get you to spend as much as they can.
While here we’ve also been able to spend some more time with the cruisers we met in Bahia Magdalena Bay. It reminds me of camp when we were young, you went away for a week, made friends in seconds and then sadly everyone went their separate way when the week ended. Cruising is a bit like that although the likelihood that we run into each other again at some point in a nice quiet (we hope) harbor is fairly high. It is sad to say goodbye, but Kristi, Neil, Teri, Ed, Colleen, LeAnn and Dave, we’ll keep the lights on for you.
Our original plan was to explore the Sea of Cortez first then head over to the mainland. We also thought we would be in La Paz (150 miles north of Cabo) by Thanksgiving but that didn’t work out so now we are rethinking the plan and will head to the mainland this week. Why the change? Because we got such a late start and because the winds have already begun to blow for extended periods of time from the north it just makes more sense to us to head over and then south. We’ll spend some time in Mazatlan and then mosey on down the pacific coast toward Puerto Vallarta. From there the plan (such as it is) is to come back this way in late February or March and explore the Sea of Cortez. I’m told there are many places we won’t want to miss. Besides I’m kind of liking this change the plan option!
For those who have heard stories about crime in Mazatlan and the mainland in general, I’ve talked with some people who are cruising there now and they have heard of no problems in the cruiser community. They also noted that the cruise ships are returning at the beginning of the new year. The story is that like anywhere else in the world, if you pay attention to where you are, don’t try to purchase things you shouldn’t anyway, and don’t stay out at the discos until 2:00 am there shouldn’t be any problems. Easy for us
