Arrived Lunenburg

This is just a brief post to record our arrival in Lunenburg. We anchored in the harbour in mid-afternoon on Wednesday 4th July after a good passage of 40 miles or so from Carter's Beach.  The passage was in complete contrast to the passage up to Carter' beach from Shelburne.  The visibility was good, the sun beat down relentlessly and there was enough wind to sail at least part of the time.  And when there was wind it came in on the starboard quarter at 12-14kts.  Of course it didn't escape Marilou's attention that these were near ideal conditions for our largest sail, the shockingly yellow asymmetric spinnaker.  And it was just as I was settling down for a few quiet moments with my freshly ground and brewed coffee that the enthusiastic cry 'Let's get the spinnaker out' came from the cockpit.

So we got to work and had it set and pulling like a good 'un in reasonably short order.  It gave us some nice sailing until the time came to furl and drop as the wind gradually veered to give us a very broad reach on our course to Lunenburg.  The big sail's best point is with the wind just aft of the beam, and when we obtained that briefly on our course line a couple of times the rig really powered up and Kiviuq almost got the bit between her teeth.

Unfortunately on the furl we broke the locking pin on the Karver furler and in the end we brought it down the traditional way behind the main and with plenty of heaving and gathering to keep it out of the water. By the time we were in the approaches to Lunenburg Marilou had it safely bagged.

A final treat came as we sailed in towards the harbour fairway with the famous replica Grand Banks schooner 'Bluenose II' behind us under full sail.  In our chosen spot we rounded up to take in the sails then speedily vacated it so that the big schooner could do the same should she wish to.  And she did.

Lunenburg is Bluenose II's home so we see a lot of her comings and goings throughout the day.  She is indeed beautiful and a credit to her builders and to the hardy men who raced the original 'Bluenose' out to the Banks and raced back even faster with a load of valuable fish fresh for the market. Her speed was legendary and the skills of her captain and crew equally so.
