Dorian and the aftermath

We rode out Hurricane Dorian at anchor in Schooner Cove together with four other foreign boats that came in for the same purpose. All the boats rode safely to their best bower anchors, I suspect on long chain scopes of 10:1 or more. We certainly did. It seems that the latest consensus among the cruising [...]

Waiting for Dorian

It was going to happen sooner or later. A hurricane is heading our way. After devastating the Abacos and Bahamas and brushing Florida, Dorian is now close E of the coast of the Carolinas, and the current forecast is that it will go right over Nova Scotia on Saturday/Sunday moving quickly in a NNE'ly [...]

Downward and upward

I realise there is quite a lot of catching up to do since my last post, which left us in Grand Manan, so apologies if this becomes something of a travelogue.

Boarded!

After St Andrews it was time to begin making our way across the Bay of Fundy towards Nova Scotia. This we decided to do in two stages. The first involved retracing our wake across Passamaquoddy Bay and around the southern end of Deer Island, then up Head Harbour Passage to the northern tip of Campobello [...]

Things that go bump in the night.

From Campobello we sailed southabout Deer Island, an area renowned for its cetacean populations (and thus also populated with whale-watching boats), into Passamaquody Bay and up to St Andrews. Here we picked up a mooring just 150m or so off Market Wharf, the large and well-appointed town wharf.

Going Downeast

We left Belfast just over a week ago on Saturday 20th July to sail down Penobscot Bay with the intention of spending a night at anchor in Seal Bay, Vinalhaven. Seal Bay is beautiful, well protected and not that far from the popular yachting centres of Camden and Rockland. Perhaps for this reason it was [...]

Here's to Fred

Alan
As I write I am listening to Fred Neil perform his song 'Everybody's Talkin'', a very successful popular piece that has been covered by numerous artists, but which few people other than Fred's fans know he wrote. For me, Fred's version of his song is quite special. And I am not the only one of this opinion here in the harbour and anchorage at Baddeck.

Baddeck is the main town in Cape Breton, with a population of ca. 1000. We arrived here yesterday (Friday) afternoon after sailing the short distance from a lunch stop in Maskell's Harbour. We don't often make lunch stops, and indeed don't often have the opportunity to do so, but yesterday after anchoring overnight in McCrae's Cove, and then passing through the Barra Strait and negotiating the lifting road bridge that spans it, we did not have far to go to Baddeck. There was time for a lunch stop! So into Maskell's Harbour we went under a clear sky and fierce sun. It was hot, and it wasn't long after setting the anchor that Marilou went over the side for a swim (Alan unselfishly observed from under the cockpit shade in order to keep a sharp lookout for great white prawns). Eventually the mate returned to the boat and reported that the keel was still on. This was celebrated with a cold non-alcoholic so-called beer and sandwiches made with Kiviuq bread.

After this pleasant sojourn we had by this time been joined by half a dozen other boats and it was time to leave. A nice reach up the coast followed by a beat in towards Kidston Island brought us to Baddeck Harbour where, after scouting around for a while, we found a spot in the crowded anchorage to put in our hook.

As we came in we spotted 'Pelerin', another British-registered alloy boat (Ovni 43) that we knew was in the general area. And it wasn't long after we anchored that Pelerin's owners, Colin and Lou, came alongside in their dinghy to say hello to the newly-arrived British alloy boat owned by fellow OCC members. And..........., it soon emerged that several years ago Colin and I had had a brief AAC blog exchange about Fred Neil. Colin, you see, is not a fan. He is a fanatic.

It is highly likely that this happy meeting will merit a few beers and exchange of yarns at some point over the weekend. And I think I can say with some certainty that the beers will most definitely be nothing less than the full monty.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In Map &Tracking above you can see where Kiviuq was located when we last reported a position to the blog. But please be aware that position reporting sometimes goes down. This can be due to a technical problem on board, to a problem with the satellite system or to a problem with the blog site. Therefore...... PLEASE NOTE THAT IN THE EVENT THERE IS NO POSITION REPORTING THIS SHOULD NOT ON ITS OWN BE TAKEN AS AN INDICATION THAT KIVIUQ AND/OR HER CREW ARE IN DIFFICULTIES. Technical/electrical problems are by no means rare at sea in relatively small vessels.
