Lighthouse

Jim
Sooooo, after a little lunch onboard the good ship Koala, we took the dinghy to the north side of the anchorage and beached it for a short walk to the famous lighthouse. It's the only lighthouse in the Bahamas with a full time person tending it. Perhaps that is because it operates using a kerosene burner for it's light! The tender winds up the mechanism which rotates the fresnel lens assembly and keeps the kerosene lamp assembly lit. The light from it is very yellow in color at night, but it seems very effective. We walked to the top up 110 stairs. And the view is SPECTACULAR! You can see for miles and get a much better perspective on the harbor and the settlement than you can from ground/water level.

Vessel Name: Koala
Vessel Make/Model: Catalina 470
Hailing Port: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Crew: Captain Jim, Nicky 1st mate, Evan 2nd mate
About: The captain is a ex-northeasterner living the goodlife aboard Koala in south Florida.
Extra: Koala is a Catalina 470 built in 2000. The draft is 6' and beam is 14'-0". Koala is also the captain's full time home for the past 11 years and so she may be sitting a bit low in the water. Ok, so maybe the draft is an inch or two more!
