Nanaimo to Comox

Day Three – Nanaimo, Vancouver Island BC to Comox, Vancouver Island BC - We left Nanaimo midmorning and it was a pretty uneventful day, with light to moderate winds with periods of sunshine. We motor sailed when the winds were favorable and we made better time than if we had just motored. It was a big fuel savings as well. We had discussed several anchorages along the way but opted to stay at Comox harbor and enjoy the amenities that come with a boat slip and dock, it really makes it easy to take the poodles ashore verses from a boat at anchor. We fueled up, parked in the slip, and enjoyed a walk through the very picturesque area of downtown Comox. Prior to arriving at the harbor we had somewhat of a tricky passage in because of a large ‘bar’ that crosses the waters outside the harbor. At low tide the deepest part of the channel is nine feet. Although our boat drafts five feet you must be ‘right on’ and be familiar with the channel to traverse it at low tide. We were fortunate that our timing was such that we came in a few hours after high tide and didn’t have any problems. The shallowest reading on the depth finder was fourteen feet. After experiencing the depths of several hundreds of feet and more, in the San Juans and the Inside Passage so far, we were a bit nervous with just fourteen feet below us.
