Weather Delay
15 June 2012 | Blind Channel Marina, BC
Mike
Today the winds were blowing 15-20 knots from the north, strait down Johnstone Strait. That is exactly the conditions we took a bashing in yesterday and we did not want a repeat. We decided to stay in Blind Channel Marina until Friday, the winds are suppose to change direction. They are still predicted at 15-20 knots but at our back is much better. There are some hiking trails here that go into an old logged out cedar forest. The forest was logged about 1900 so the new "second growth" cedar trees are still over 100 years old. But their size is dwarfed by the size of the old first growth stumps. We could roughly count the rings on the old stumps and they were well over 1000 years old in 1900. In the picture you can still see the foot holds that were cut with axes where the loggers would stand and cut the trees with big push & pull hand saws. Not sure why they had to get higher to cut, but I suppose they had to get above the widest part at the base so their saws had room to draw. This was a very nice place, by far the prettiest and most peaceful place yet. Small, quite and laid-back, but they have all the necessary amenities, even a general store. The departure Plan is an early, 5am, departure Friday morning, if the weather forecasters are correct, we should catch the current and the wind in our favor.
P.S. Thanks for the comments on the blog, it lets us know they are being read.
