From Wrangell to Petersburg
27 May 2013 | Petersburg
Mike
We left Wrangell at 9 AM for a long day to Petersburg. We had to go through wrangells narrows at a specific time due to the spring tides. The spring tides are when the moon and sun align and pull together to give higher high tides and lower low tides. Currents at mid tide change are in the areas of 16 to 17 Miles per hour in these narrows. We had to pass through as the tides peaked to avoid the mid tidal currents. The boat was moving through the water at about 5.5 mph, but the boat was actually moving at 9.5 mph due to the tidal currents pushing us. This allowed us to make great time to Petersburg and we arrived at 5 PM. Winds were very light and always on our nose so we could not sail but motored all the way. This was a very calm evening so we were able to go out and unfurl the Genoa headsail and take a look at the damage. It turns out the shredded material that we could see is only an outside fabric that protects the sail from UV, so the sail is still usable. The plan is now a 4-day trip to Juneau or Auke Bay. We will more than likely be out of communications for those days. We saw dall porpoise, seals, and Eagles today. Picture is an eagle at Petersburg dock.
